Heath Ledger's Haunting Video All the proceeds from the iTunes video downloads of "King Rat" in the first month of release will go to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, Paul Watson's warriors on the front lines of whale defense. The "King Rat" video was directed by the late great Ledger, to be a "visual plea against the legal commercial whale hunts taking place off the coast of Australia." The Origami Whale Project With each year Japan, Norway, and Iceland increase their self-made quotas to hunt whales. The 2008 whaling quotas from Japan, Norway, and Iceland total close to 2,400 whales. Through global public participation, a "Curtain of 30,000Origami Whales" was completed in May 2007 as a powerful visual statement and memorial for the lives of whales killed in the past 21 years. It certainly is that. It is haunting and shocking in parts, with some gross-out graphic scenes. It is also humorous and light in other sections, with whales that are comical and lovable, despite what they are up to. It does challenge our roles in destruction of the oceans, and asks us to plumb the depths of what makes us human. Despite the more gruesome aspects it seems to offer more hope for a better world, to an end to the slaughter.
According to the press release, Heath Ledger had asked Modest Mouse to direct the video back in January of 2007, while visiting his native Australia. whales.
As a surfer for over 30 years, I continue to carry this love of animals, and have had innumerable encounters with nature in and around the sea. I hold surfing is as a priceless and important activity for my health, and it allows me to observe shore and sea birds and have close contact with seals and sea lions. I swim with dolphins and see whales passing near shore. These experiences, along with my love for travel, make surfing a compelling and rewarding part of my life. Inspired by the movie: "The Endless Summer", my travels take me to places in the world in search of good surf in warm climates. I have been to Fiji, Mexico, South Africa, French Polynesia, Japan, and Tonga, and have made repeated visits to Australia, Costa Rica, Hawaii, Indonesia, and New Zealand.

During the 20th century alone, more than 1.4 million whales have been killed. In the process, commercial whaling systematically depleted whale population after whale population. Estimates indicate that the impacts of previous commercial whaling led to the reduction of whale populations, leaving species such as the Humpback Whale down to 10%, the Blue Whale down to less than 4% from "pre-exploitation numbers", the Gray Whale down to 12%, the Right Whale down to 6%. All of these whales are among at least 7 whale species listed as Endangered. These numbers may be shocking, but also disturbing is the fact that scientists from outside of Japan have purchased whale meats from Japanese markets to find DNA results indicating that Humpback, Blue, and Sei whale meats are still being sold.
