The Fragile
Forest: Inside Brazilian Amazonia’ is a celebration of the spirit of the
Amazonian rain forests. The book aims to introduce the reader to the
mystery and romance of the region, supported by scores of photographs.
While every attempt has been made to bring out fascinating facts about
the Amazon basin and its significance as the greatest biodiversity
hot spot on this planet, this book is not intended to be a detailed
historic, economic, scientific or geographical reference for the region.
The book
begins with an introduction to Brazil, the country where most of the
Amazon basin is located, and touches on its vibrant life and history in
the chapter titled “Brazil: The Country and its People”. The next
chapter, “Marvels of the Amazon Basin” deals with the exotic flora and
fauna of Brazilian Amazonia, captured in numerous photographs. The
chapter after that is based on research experiences in the Amazon basin,
including Caxiuanã, Cavianhã, Breves, Chaves and Marajó islands. “An
Indian in the Amazonia” is a subjective description of the tropical
rain forests and the magnificence of the river Amazon, backed by many
incredible images.
The chapter titled “Science and Research” examines
the role science must play in preserving the rain forest. “Climate
Change and the Amazonia” looks into the vital part the forests have in
fighting global warming. “Sustaining the Amazonia” investigates exactly
why it is important for this region to survive. An important part of the
rain forest is the canopy layer: The chapter “Tall Tree Stories: The
Amazonian Canopy” explains its significance to the survival of the
species and the competition for sunlight. The chapter, “Travel and
Photography” offers useful tips for tourists and photographers on what
they can expect on a visit here, and how they can make the most of their
experiences.
“The Fragile Forest: Inside Brazilian Amazonia” contains 160
color photographs and three maps depicting the fabulous landscape,
people and wildlife of the region. This book is a collector's delight
and a treasure for anyone looking for a pictorial representation of
magnificence of the wilderness of the Amazonian rain forests.
