The Ocean Girl Project Sustainable Surf camps introduces girls to the exhilaration of learning to surf and exposes them to other ocean activities in order to broaden their life experiences with a positive healthy non competitive activity that can positively impact their overall confidence and self esteem. We are offering this with financial assistance available to all girls!

We offer educational workshops on ocean safety, reefs, cultural impacts of the ocean and overall sustainability issues here in Hawaii. Our experienced and supportive volunteer staff   share the positive impact surfing and other ocean activities have had on their lives.

Surfing is a fun and cool activity, and it is a very challenging one; it requires determination and adapting to the ever-changing ocean conditions and elements. We are going to teach the essentials of surfing and work hard every day, which is part of surfing too. We believe the ocean and surfing to be the ultimate classroom, and a place to meet and overcome challenges, tap into strength and motivation and experience the rewards of personal perseverance. Note-expect to be very tired each night.

Our hope is to foster not only a love for the ocean and environment but also connect girls to strong role models, healthy activities and opportunities that can benefit girls now and all through their life.

Ocean Girl surf camps  take place near Waikiki on Oahu. We have picked the very best locations for safe and successful learning.

The surf camp groups are small in order to provide your child with an outstanding personal experience and give her an opportunity to make new friends. (10 girls max 1-3 ratio)

It helps to have experience swimming in the ocean, but it’s not a requirement. However, we do require that all surf camp participants, have basic swimming abilities. If your girl can tread water for at least five minutes, and swim a few laps in a pool without being exhausted, then no problem!

Let us know if you are a family or know a girl who needs financial sponsorship, Ocean Girl Projects mission is to provide a surf camp opportunity for all girls.

If you would like to  help sponsor a girl please contact Colleen by email or call 808.852-0106.  After signing up you will be sent maps and full information. View  blog for updates & please Follow us on FACE BOOK

 Brief History & updates

The idea for the Ocean Girl Project Sustainable Surf Camp began on a beautiful wave one day in the sea and stirred the hearts and minds of a small group of local female surfers.

The intention, to share with young girls our love of the ocean through surfing, water safety, sustainable practices and mutual respect for land, sea and each other, and lastly to ask surfers and the local community to get involved.

After several great surf sessions (I mean meetings) we (gulp)agreed to transform the dream to reality. We committed to working hard, volunteering, and we knew we would need lots of help from other surfers and community.

We believed (and still do) we could not only host a sustainable surf camp but also could make it available to girls who might not be able to attend a camp in Hawaii due to soaring costs.

That was our beginning and now the surf camp is reality, we are totally stoked.

While the surf camp is able to run safely, efficiently and smoothly by our instructor and other volunteers, and a lot of things we need can be donated, there still are important and very practical things that have to be paid for, like insurance, gas, and food, etc.

There are many ways you can help, here are some suggestions:

  • Sponsor a girl with a financial contribution, everything helps!(our camp provides snacks, juice, healthy lunch, equipment, instruction and transportation to field trips)
  • Donate unused or gently used gear such as rash guards, leashes, wax, reusable water bottles, caps, soft top surf boards, sunscreen, etc (you can drop off at Surf Garage, or we will gladly pick up)
  • Spread the word, post the surf camp link, share or add to social network sites, pass out fliers, please tell others
  • Refer a young girl’s family to camp (maybe from a local group at church, school, boys & girls clubs, etc)
  • Volunteer an hour, afternoon, or more
  • Kids can help too, wash the family cars, offer to walk the dog, ask someone in your family to match your efforts! Recycle plastic bottles!!
  • Frequent the generous companies listed under sponsors & supporters
  • Bring a lei to the graduation ceremony, meet and support the girls and the volunteers!

As we said, this is a community effort and we are so very grateful to have a wonderful response and support from not only surfers but the whole community.
