Film Finish
Bamboo surfboards use a proprietary semigloss film finish for the final coat. No pinholes and lightweight, the resilient film tends to dent rather than shatter, maintaining a water proof coating.
Because any board of a reasonable weight can be damaged, the film finish is easy to repair with epoxy.

Fish or tapa prints or other graphics can be included under the film finish if desired. see logo and graphics in the gallery.

Pricing is generally in the $125 per foot of length for bamboo. Wood veneer boards are on the $150 to $200 per foot range.

OUR FEATURED "GREEN" BIG ISLAND SURFBOARD COMPANY

Ride what you like, with respect for the 'aina.
Bamboo Surfboards = happy surfers, happy planet

When Gary says bamboo is “green” he means it does not take much energy to prepare the bamboo fiber for laminating, as the 0.3 mm thick veneer air dries quickly. It can be cut into strips and woven into mats or used as a “uni-directional” fiber in laminates."

Bamboo Surfboards

These are truly “green” boards - the sanding dust is not itchy, the foam dust is recyclable, and the renewable bamboo fiber trimmings decompose into soil. Epoxy has very few volatile fumes, is stronger and is used more efficiently than polyester resin in regular boards. Very little epoxy winds up on the floor and very little acetone is used in cleanup.

Durability is often overlooked as an aspect of a green product. While it is true that rocks will always be stronger than a reasonable weight board, I pride myself in the lack of deck dents in a bamboo NFC surfboard - common with a comparable weight fiberglass board.

RIDIN BAMBOO

Ultimate & Green: a Bamboo Surfboard ??
“Ultimate” should always come with quotes. From which viewpoint: Performance? Durability? Lightweight? Most Green? Reasonable Cost? I think I’ve got ‘em all covered.

Let’s be realistic, there are ‘surf animals’ who can destroy almost anything. Every material or construction technique has shortcomings. In general, if we are talking custom boards:

Hollow boards, no matter how strong, can get water inside, are usually heavier and they take forever to make or are molded. EPS (Expanded) and XPS (eXtruded) foams can melt with heat or polyester resin, EPS can absorb water.
Urethane foams are not recyclable, are weight challenged for their strength and can shrink back over time.

Carbon and synthetic fibers are expensive because of the energy required to make them and have production problems.
The trick is to make an affordable board that has a reasonable balance of these important elements.

Some of the reasons I think bamboo could be the ultimate fiber in a surfboard:

Performance - bamboo has a unique flex and can be made in most custom shapes.

Durability – bamboo boards have a longer fatigue life, have greater impact resistant skins and strong fin box mounting.

Weight – bamboo can be made as light as a glass board, while far stronger.

Cost –bamboo surfboards are now cost competitive with high-end glass boards.

Esthetics – Bamboo surfboards look naturally beautiful

Environmental elements - Bamboo is a renewable fiber, worker friendly, scraps decompose.

Riley Balsawood Surfboards
Founded in 1996 by Mark Riley. Mark had returned from an extensive trip through Central and South America where he had been looking for a stronger and lighter material for surfboards when he stumbled upon balsa wood. He returned to Sydney with enough balsa for two surfboards and started shaping a 6’8’’ foam core and a solid 9’0’’. ...

Country Feeling Surfboards celebrates the nature that surrounds us with surfboards made with environmentally friendly materials: soy-based and sugar-based foams; deck inlays made from hemp, organic cotton, bamboo and silk; and resin that is catalyzed by the sun.

North Shore shapers Jeff Bushman and Kyle Bernhardt have teamed up to design smart shapes that maximize form and function. Their first batch of Country Feeling boards is a classic line of fishes, twin fins, single fins, four-fins, eggs, funboards, longboards, and stand up paddleboards--all kinder to the environment and engineered to bring the soul back into surfing.

Transforming the industry from ego to eco is a heady process that begins with everyone taking a conscientious step in the right direction. We must recognize that if we don't take care of our planet, the magic will disappear. The pioneers of Hawai`i's green evolution invite you to join them in perpetuating that country feeling.
